SAT 1/28 7:15 - 9:00pm TRADITIONAL HULA KAHIKO - 'Anapau (a hula tribute to Queen Lili'uokalani as passed down to Kumu Lei from Loea Hula Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett) ***BACKGROUND OF 'ANAPAU: Perpetuation of life and fertility was a sacred endeavor in old Hawai’i, especially where the ali’i were concerned, so the life-creating organs were named and honored with chants and hula. “ ‘Anapau ” (“Frisky”) was the name given to Lili’uokalani’s genitalia. This kind of dancing usually has more hip movement than foot movement. Until recently, due to Western missionary influence, these types of songs weren’t often performed. In the interest of accurate history and expression of traditional Hawaiian culture, these hulas are being performed more often now.
